Build a secure streaming React chat

Build a React chat that streams an Anvia agent through an authenticated server route. The browser uses Anvia's React transport; the provider key and agent remain on the server.

Outcome

You will have a Vite React application with:

  • useChat and createFetchTransport for JSONL chat streaming;
  • same-origin and bearer-token checks before model execution;
  • bounded, schema-validated text-only history;
  • an explicit event projection that excludes prompts, reasoning, and provider payloads; and
  • browser cancellation through the hook's Stop action.

This is a complete small application boundary, not an identity system. Its shared demo token is kept in React state only. Replace it with your application's short-lived session or access token.

When to use it

Use this shape for a same-origin authenticated chat where the product owns its browser UI while keeping the agent and provider credentials server-side. Add resumable storage when a disconnected client must replay a long-running response.

Prerequisites and packages

  • Node.js 22 or newer and pnpm 11 or newer.
  • An OpenAI API key with access to gpt-5.5.
  • A random demo access token generated with openssl rand -hex 32.

Architecture and request flow

  1. useChat converts local UI messages into an Anvia UIStreamRequest.
  2. createFetchTransport posts JSONL requests plus the bearer token to /api/chat.
  3. Vite proxies the same-origin development request to Hono.
  4. The route authenticates, checks origin, bounds the body, and validates text-only messages.
  5. The server streams agent.prompt(messages).stream() through an event allow-list.
  6. The hook renders text deltas and can abort client consumption with chat.stop().

Authentication decides who may call the route. Event projection separately decides what an authenticated caller may observe.

Configuration and browser contract

Do not prefix secrets with VITE_; Vite exposes variables with that prefix to browser code. Add .env to .gitignore, copy .env.example, and fill the copy locally.

Server boundaries

The authentication module reads server-only configuration and uses a constant-time comparison for the shared demo credential. Request validation accepts only user and assistant text messages; it does not accept system messages, tools, attachments, or arbitrary metadata from the browser.

Agent, projection, and HTTP route

The public stream type is deliberately narrower than AgentStreamEvent. The route never forwards raw prompts, history, reasoning, tool arguments, sources, traces, usage, or provider responses.

React UI

The conversation renderer intentionally displays only text and sanitized errors. Keep the Vite-generated main.tsx; it continues to render <App />.

Setup and run

Copy .env.example to .env, fill it, and keep the file out of version control. Start the API:

Start Vite in a second terminal with pnpm dev, open http://127.0.0.1:5173, paste the demo token, and send a message.

Expected behavior

  • User text appears immediately and assistant text grows as deltas arrive.
  • Stop aborts browser consumption and returns the controller to idle.
  • Missing credentials return 401; another origin returns 403.
  • Invalid, oversized, non-text, or non-user-final messages fail before a provider call.
  • The network response contains only the three allow-listed public event shapes.
  • Provider failures use a sanitized server message.

Stopping client consumption does not undo server work that already completed. Production tools need their own cancellation and idempotency rules.

Security and production changes

  • Replace the shared token with session middleware and authorize each tool or data lookup.
  • Keep provider credentials in a server secret manager, never browser storage or VITE_* values.
  • Add edge body limits, rate limits, concurrency limits, deadlines, request IDs, and abuse controls.
  • Serve web and API behind HTTPS on one origin or configure a narrow credentialed CORS policy.
  • Treat browser-provided history as context, never identity, policy, or system instruction.
  • Preserve the event allow-list when adding tools, sources, traces, or usage.
  • Add an @anvia/server resumable stream store when disconnect replay is required.

Failure cases and tests

Use a fake completion model for deterministic events and HTTP tests for the route. Assert wrong origin and token make zero model calls; body and message limits fail closed; event projection never exposes reasoning or tool data; provider exceptions are sanitized; and abort leaves the UI usable. Add a browser test for successive sends and Stop.

Runnable references and extensions

Those files demonstrate current primitives. This page provides a coherent application layout, but it intentionally omits generated Vite files, CSS, and deployment-specific identity middleware. Next, add durable conversations, authorized tools, @anvia/react-ui, or resumable streams.
